Empowering Youth Through Health Equity: A Recap of VEEC’s Summer 2024 Initiatives

August 2024, Newark NJ – As part of the ongoing partnership between the inclusive Health Innovation Together (iHIT) and the Vaccine Equity Education Campaign (VEEC), we are thrilled to share the successes of our Back-to-School Summer 2024 program. iHIT has been instrumental in supporting VEEC’s mission to bridge gaps in healthcare access through innovative strategies and community-centered initiatives. In collaboration with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Newark (BGCN), VEEC left a lasting mark on the Newark community through a series of impactful educational and advocacy activities designed to promote vaccine equity and enhance public health awareness among Newark’s youth.

A Summer of Learning and Advocacy

From July 5th to August 9th 2024, VEEC Fellows immersed themselves in a comprehensive curriculum held at 1 Avon Ave, Newark, NJ. This experience included interactive lessons, workshops, field trips, and presentations, all centered on vaccine equity, healthcare, biotechnology, and research. The program culminated in a celebration and panel discussion at Rutgers New Brunswick, emphasizing the importance of community health services and the role various stakeholders play in achieving health equity.

Bringing Health to the Community: Health Fairs

On July 25, 2024, VEEC Fellows took their knowledge into the community, organizing and participating in a health fair at New Community Extended Care. This event was a vital platform for disseminating crucial information about vaccine equity and public health. Attendees received free health screenings, vaccinations, and educational materials, while interactive activities and games provided an engaging way to promote healthy behaviors.

Expanding the Reach: The Camden Campaign

Recognizing the need to extend their efforts, VEEC Fellows launched the Camden Campaign, targeting underserved communities in Camden, NJ. This initiative focused on raising awareness about vaccine equity, conducting outreach programs, and collaborating with local organizations to improve access to healthcare services. The campaign’s success was marked by significant community participation and the strengthening of relationships between health advocates and Camden residents.

Strengthening Through Partnerships: RU Health and COOL Labs

VEEC’s Summer 2024 initiatives were further amplified by strategic partnerships with Rutgers University Health (RU Health) and COOL Labs. These collaborations provided VEEC Fellows with access to cutting-edge research facilities, expert guidance, and practical insights into the healthcare industry. The partnership culminated in a powerful health facility visit on July 26, 2024, where VEEC Ambassadors from BGCN visited the New Jersey Health Coordinated Linkage and Research with Heart at the New Jersey Medical School’s Research Division for Infectious Diseases.

Voices from the Fellows

The true impact of VEEC’s Summer Experience is best captured through the voices of the Fellows themselves:

– “VEEC has been an outlet to help reach the communities and educate them on the things that they need. VEEC has been able to successfully work towards the goal of vaccine equity by helping people from different backgrounds and upbringings get their specific health requirements met.” – L’Nya, VEEC Fellow

– “VEEC is making significant strides in promoting vaccine equity in New Jersey through targeted community engagement and educational initiatives. By partnering with the Boys and Girls Club, VEEC educates youth about the importance of vaccines, fostering informed future generations. Through these proactive measures, VEEC is closing the gap in vaccine coverage and contributing to the overall health and well-being of New Jersey’s diverse populations. I am so delighted to be a part of this initiative.” – Alia, VEEC Fellow
